Let's be blunt here...if you're single, Valentine's Day can be a day of self-loathing and pity. You sit in front of the television, watching Pretty Woman and imagining everyone else is out cozying up to their sweetheart over a candlelight dinner at some oh-so-intimate Italian bistro. Your roommate gets flowers from her boyfriend.
The effect of overexposure to all things pink and lace and paper cupid cutouts, leaves you convinced that you are going to die alone, kept company only by the horde of semi-feral cats that have taken over your lonely, dingy basement apartment.
Lies.
All lies.
The fact is, make ups and breakups have been going on for centuries and the good news is: people survive. In fact, people survive and take over empires, rule countries, and go down in history, despite the fact that they were....gasp....single.
Let me clarify.
On Thursday, February 7th, the Penn Museum will be offering a special program called "Greatest Heartbreak of Ancient Times"
From their website:
Before there was a Britney and K-Fed, a Jennifer and Brad, or a Whitney and Bobby, ancient romances caused scandal and heartbreak. The Young Friends of Penn Museum invite you to be intrigued by the salacious details of some the most drama-filled break-ups in history at their third-annual steamy Valentine's Day celebration. Dr. Jennifer Wegner, Research Scientist, Egyptian Section, presents "What Happens in Egypt, Stays in Egypt" and Dr. Jean MacIntosh Turfa, Research Associate, Mediterranean Section, talks about “Lying Etruscan Gods and the Mortals who Love Them.”
Cocktails and mingling to follow. Cash bar. $10 for non-members; $5 for Museum members (includes one complimentary drink).
Reservations recommended, please call 215/898-5093.
Tickets can be purchased online at http://www.museum.upenn.edu/new/events/calitem.php?which=1458

Restaurant Week
Center City District is gearing up for Restaurant Week 2008!
From Sunday, January 27th to Saturday, February 2nd, over thirty Center City restaurants will be offering a special three course menu for just $35. Although this does not include extras like drinks and taxes, it is a great opportunity to try out some posh hotspots whose menus are otherwise out of the student budget.
Some of the hip spots participating in this week include Dolce, Smith & Wollensky, Susanna Foo, and Audrey Claire. There are over thirty places involved and everything from menus to reservation information is available online at http://www.centercityphila.org/restaurantweek/reservations.aspx.
Reservations at the better places go very fast so it's important to get in on the action early!
